Project Description

This proposal integrates the expertise of multiple partners, including MTEC/NSTDA, KAIST, Kasetsart University, Mahidol University, PSU, NIMT, International University and Nong Lam University, to tackle the dual challenges of arsenic contamination and biomass waste management in the Mekong River Basin. The project leverages locally sourced agricultural residues to produce engineered biochar for arsenic removal. MTEC/NSTDA will play a central role in advanced material characterization, pilot prototype testing, and facilitating technology transfer for industrial-scale applications. Through collaborative actions, such as the installation of community biochar As of 25 Jan 2025, biochar-based water treatment units, arsenic monitoring, farmer training, and regional workshops, this project provides a practical, low-cost, and sustainable model for water quality improvement and greenhouse gas mitigation. It aligns with the Mekong–Republic of Korea Cooperation Plan of Action (2021–2025) and the UN 2030 Sustainable Development Goals, positioning the Mekong region as a leader in integrated solutions for safe water and climate resilience.
